Getting Started Tips

Getting started with Kettle

Getting started takes a few steps.

Video Overview

Process Description:

  1. Download the chrome extension from the Chrome Web Store
    • Note if you are using Firefox or Opera these versions of Kettle are coming soon. Safari is not supported at this time.
  2. Accept the Browser Permission Scopes
    • For a more detailed explanation of permissions please see the “security section”
    • All tabs will refresh to ensure proper usage of kettle
  3. Kettle will redirect automatically to the onboarding website click “get started”
  4. Select a “G-suite” or “Microsoft” corporate login
  5. Kettle will ask you to confirm that you are connected to the right account.
    • It is important that you select your corporate account otherwise Kettle will be assisting with emails and calendar activities that your co-workers won’t see.
  6. Choose to Sync your calendar to receive time-blocks to signal to others or “skip” if you are not interested in this feature.
    • For a more detailed explanation of permissions please see the “security section”
  7. Choose to Sync your Gmail to temporarily pause emails during a session or “skip” if you are not interested in this feature.
    • For a more detailed explanation of permissions please see the “security section”
  8. Sync Slack to temporarily pause messages and enable Do Not Disturb
    • For a more detailed explanation of permissions please see the “security section”
  9. Complete a 1 min survey so that Kettle can customize your experience for calendar invites and other future features.
  10. Click “Yes” to open the kettle browser extension
  11. Kettle will then greet you and show you how to start your first session.

Creating a good environment to get work done

Before you start a session, optimize your environment.

Kettle helps you manage your workplace communications and browser notifications but there are other habits that can help you build a better environment to get work done in.

  • Place your phone Facedown on your desk (or even better, put it away in a drawer or a bag)

Place your phone face down on your desk

  • Use a good pair of noise-canceling headphones & optional Kettle Beacon. Both devices can offer reductions with in-person distractions by reducing ambient noise and signaling to your team when you are busy.

Use headphones or a Kettle Beacon

  • Kettle’s integrations to Email, Calendar, & Slack also work with the corresponding desktop apps. However, if there are other applications that are distracting you, we recommend you turn off notifications on your “desktop” as well

Starting and Stopping Kettle Sessions

You can start and stop Kettle sessions in 3 ways:

The chrome extension using the “Hold Messages” Button

“/kettle start” & “/kettle stop” commands in any slack channel

Optional “Kettle Key” available only in Teams. 1-click starts a session. The second click ends the session.

Setting expectations low makes it easy so you don’t have to rely on motivation or willpower, which are unreliable.

~BJ Fogg in Tiny Habits

Be intentional

Set an intention and then commit to one thing.

  • What’s one important thing you want to get done?
  • Commit to focus for a period of time.
  • Refrain from even just a “quick check” of your phone or the internet.

Setup and Settings

How many accounts can Kettle integrate to?

Right now Kettle can integrate into 1 of each account type. 1 email, 1 slack, and 1 calendar client. In the future, we plan to support multiple accounts per type.

What happens if I “skip” an integration during onboarding?

If you skip an integration in onboarding Kettle will not provide assistance to you in managing that application. If you’d like to integrate again later, please reach out to customer support ([email protected]) who will assist you in integrating your new account.

In the future, we will allow you to add/remove accounts from the Kettle “settings gear” shortcut.

Why won’t kettle load when I open it?

  • At this point in time Kettle will only open on https pages. If your site is http, Kettle will not open. This is a known issue that we are working on.
  • Kettle will not open on “Google Chromestore” pages, this is a security restriction from Google to prevent developers from tampering with the store
  • Kettle will not open on a blank tab unless you toggle on the “ toggle analytics on new tab” setting.

Settings

Kettle has a few settings that you can adjust in the app. Here’s how they work.

Go to the “settings gear” in the Kettle Shortcuts menu to access the settings panel. From here you can turn “on/off’ two features with the slider.

  • Show Kettle analytics on “new tab”

Settings

  •  This feature is not currently active (1.7.20) – Daily calendar event reminder – Kettle Coach ([email protected]) will send daily calendar reminders for focus sessions and breaks

We’re working on adding additional settings later. In the meantime, if you need help with your settings, contact us at [email protected].

What distractions does Kettle help with?

Does Kettle work with my desktop apps and notifications?

Kettle can help you manage your desktop notifications from Email, Calendar, and Slack because Kettle integrates at an API level.

However, if there are other applications that are distracting you, we recommend you turn off notifications on your “desktop” as well (instructions below).

Does Kettle work with my mobile apps and notifications?

Kettle can help you manage your mobile notifications from Email, Calendar, and Slack because Kettle integrates at an API level.

However, if there are other applications on your phone that are distracting you, we recommend you turn your ringer on silent and place your phone facedown (or even better, put it away in a drawer or bag).

In-person distractions bother me the most. Can Kettle help me there?

To reduce in-person distractions, you can use a good pair of noise-canceling headphones and an optional Kettle Beacon. Both can offer reductions with in-person distractions by reducing ambient noise and signaling to your team when you are busy.

If you don’t currently have a Kettle beacon and would like one, please contact customer support at [email protected]/p>

Troubleshooting

I installed the extension but don't see it in my toolbar

Enable the Chrome Extension

After updating to a new version, your extension may have been disabled. If you don’t see the extension in your toolbar, go to the chrome extension page and click the “Enable this item” link in the yellow bar at the top OR go to chrome://extensions and click the toggle switch at the bottom-right of the extension box so that it turns from gray to blue.

When I start the extension, I see a blank screen in the Kettle window

To fix this issue, clear cached images and files. In the chrome menu at the top right, click More, then go to More Tools -> Clear Browsing Data and check “Cached images and files”. After clearing, the extension should load properly and be working as expected. Open a new tab and try it out.

If the above fix does not work, go to https://hello.kettle.ai and login if necessary. When you see the screen that says “Let’s start your first session”, you should be all set. Push yes to start a session.

If the above fix does not work, you will need to remove and re-install the extension using the steps below.

  1. In your chrome address bar, go to chrome://extensions (or in the chrome menu at the top right click More, then go to More Tools -> Extensions). Remove the Kettle Assistant chrome extension.
  2. Clear cached images and files (in the chrome menu at the top right click More, then go to More Tools -> Clear Browsing Data and check “Cached images and files”)
  3. Reinstall the chrome extension

If you are having trouble resolving this issue and need additional help, please contact us at [email protected]
